PITCAIRN OF MUNESS in the Parish of Unst

  1. GEORGE PITCAIRN of Assiter, [8th of Muness] merchant in Lerwick, acquired the estate of Muness from Gilbert Bruce of Clivocast and Muness, his wife's uncle, on 28th February 1718. He married Ursula, daughter of Andrew Bruce, tutor of Muness, and had issue:
    1. James
    2. Andrew
    3. Robert
    James and Andrew were both witnesses to a Disposition by Laurence Umphray of Voe, John, his eldest son, and Margaret Umphray, his spouse, to James Mitchell of Girlesta, on June 1735; and
  2. GEORGE PITCAIRN, shipmaster and merchant, Lerwick, nephew of the preceding, was brother of Archibald Pitcairn, merchant, Lerwick. He was the father of Barbara Pitcairn, the principal character in the Busta Succession Case, who it was alleged, had been privately married to John Gifford, younger of Busta, and died 5th May 1766. He also had issue:
    1. Elizabeth, who married 6th July 1742, Alexander Innes, M.D.
    2. Margaret, who married 8th July 1754, Rev. Alexander Pitcairn
    3. Ellis.
