BRUCE OF MUNESS in the parish of Unst

  1. ANDREW BRUCE of Muness [1st of Muness] was the second son of Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie, and succeeded to the estates in Shetland, while his elder brother , Alexander, inherited those in Perthshire, and was served heir to his mother, Elizabeth Gray, 1595. He died on 12th February 1645, having married in 1600 Isobel, daughter of Malcolm Sinclair of Quendale, and had issue:
    1. Andrew, his heir.
    2. Alexander, died young.
    3. Marjory, married 18th July 1625, Robert Bruce of Sumburgh.
    4. Elizabeth
    By Katherine, daughter of James Fordyce, Crail, he had a natural son, William, the ancestor of the Bruces of Urie.
  2. ANDREW BRUCE of Sandwick, afterwards of Muness [2nd of Muness], died 16th September 1671. He married Ursilla, daughter of Mr Gilbert Mouat of Garth, minister of Delting, and had issue
    1. Hector, his heir.
    2. Gilbert of Clivocast
    3. Andrew of Collaster, Vice-Steward of Zetland, served tutor to his nephews, Andrew and John, 13th March 1682, died 1696, having married (first), Margaret, daughter of Charles Sinclair of Scalloway, but had no issue; and (second) before 1690, Elizabeth, daughter of Mr James Ross, minister of Northmaven, and had issue:
      1. Laurence
      2. Andrew
      3. James
      4. Ursilla married George Pitcairn of Assitter, merchant, Lerwick, afterwards of Muness.
      5. Elizabeth, married Charles Perk, and had Andrew, died unmarried, and Ann, married Gilbert Henry,
      6. Barbara
      7. Jean
    4. Arthur, married, and had issue:Andrew and 2 daughters
    5. Elizabeth married (first) Andrew Pitcairn of Skerpo, and (second) James Scott of Voesgarth.
    6. Marjory, married Patrick Mouat of Hamnavoe.
    7. Margaret
    8. Ursilla
  3. HECTOR BRUCE of Muness [3rd of Muness], died 4th June 1683, married 24th May 1662, Barbara, daughter of John Sinclair of Quendale. She died 22nd May 1675, and had issue
    1. Andrew, his heir.
    2. John of Aith
    3. Margaret, married 1690, John Scott of Scottshall.
    4. Ursilla, married 1692, Charles Stewart of Bigtoun.

  4. ANDREW BRUCE of Muness [4th of Muness], served heir to his father, 20th November 1680, drowned through his boat being upset in a squall off Hammersness, 1699. He married (first) 1686, Janet, daughter of William Sinclair of Dunbeath, but had no issue; and (second) Margaret, daughter of Laurence Sinclair of Quendale, who survived him, and married James Baikie of Tankerness, and had issue
    1. Hector, died young.
    2. Margaret, died young.
  5. JOHN BRUCE of Aith and Muness [5th of Muness], died 1703. He married 1699 Grizel, daughter of Robert Bruce of Sumburgh, and had issue
    1. Robert, his heir,
    2. Elizabeth.
    His widow married after his death, in 1707, Thomas Hunter of Lunna, and in 1720, Simon Fraser, second son of Fraser of Broadland.
  6. ROBERT BRUCE of Muness [6th of Muness], born 1700, was drowned on leaving Peterhead, 14th December 1717, without issue.
  7. GILBERT BRUCE of Clivocast and Muness [7th of Muness], son of Andrew Bruce, succeeded, and died 8th March 1725. On 20th February 1718, he disponed the estate of Muness, to George Pitcairn of Assitter, his niece's husband. He married Margaret, daughter of William Bruce of Sumburgh, and had issue
    1. Andrew.
    2. Ursilla, married 1701, John Scott, fiar of Voesgarth, and died 15th November 1716.
    3. Marjorie, died 1719, married John Gauden of Swinister.
    4. Margaret, married James Youngclause

ANDREW BRUCE OF MOWANES, descended of the family of Cultmalindie,
Bears two coats quarterlie, first, Or, a saltyre engrailed gules, on a chief of the second a mollet of ye first, be the name of Bruce, Second, gules, a lyon rampant argent, be the name of Gray, the third as the second, the fourth as ye first.
Crest : A dexter hand erected holding a heart proper.
Motto: “Omnia vincit amor”.
Registered about 1690.
